Extra Butter and PUMA, renowned collaborators in the world of sneaker culture, join forces once again to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Puma Clyde silhouette. Following their previous ultra-limited releases, the dynamic duo unveils a fresh iteration titled “NYC,” paying homage to the city where Extra Butter proudly calls home. This latest partnership exemplifies the enduring significance of the PUMA Clyde, elevated through the lens of New York City’s vibrant spirit.
Originally introduced in 1971 as the signature shoe of basketball legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier, the Clyde was designed to meet Frazier’s specific preferences. Seeking a low-top silhouette and the ability to don different colorways for each game, Frazier’s vision was realized through the use of suede, which facilitated easy dyeing. Eventually, the name “Clyde” transitioned to “PUMA Suede” when the rights to the former expired.
The upcoming Extra Butter x PUMA Clyde “NYC” pairs feature pristine white premium leather uppers, elegantly contrasted by grey suede mudguards. Channeling the essence of the city, the sneakers boast “City Worn” Formstripes, invoking the visual of well-worn urban landscapes. Embodying a nostalgic touch, vintage subway token graphics grace the tongue tab, paying homage to the iconic transportation system that defines New York. Stitched on the inner tongue, the labels read “A New York City Story – by Extra Butter,” proudly signifying the collaborative narrative.
Completing the design, the rubber soles proudly display the “NYC” letter branding, providing a distinct visual cue that ties the sneakers back to their roots. The incorporation of subtle details, such as scuffed form stripes and subway-inspired motifs on the midsole and sockliners, serves as a nod to the ubiquitous presence of New York’s bustling subway system. Additionally, a sturdy toe bumper adds a touch of ruggedness to the Extra Butter x PUMA Clyde 50 “NYC.”
The Extra Butter x PUMA Clyde 50 “NYC” will be hitting the shelves at Extra Butter on June 3 for the price of $110.
